In the FOX TV series
GLEE, Sue Sylvester (Jayne Lynch's character) mercilessly berates the cheer leading team she coaches by asking a rhetorical question: “Do you think this is hard...?” and then she invites people to try facing some hardship like living with Hepatitis. For those of you who are facing unemployment, for those of you who feel you and your business are a failure, I have something I would like to share. Do you think this is hard? try being chased out of your home because of your race, or your political affiliation; try having the neighborhood that you grew up in being torn apart by war, hatred and destruction; try being forced to flee your homeland and having to spend months, or even years in a camp.

These are the type of experience thousands of refugees possess in their memories. I have had the privilege of meeting individuals who have gone through these type of hardships and have overcome their hardships with amazing resilience. I would like to share with you a series of stories about refugees who overcame hard, unimaginable obstacles, and still held on to their dreams and desires of self-improvement by starting their own businesses and obtain success. Unlike coach Sylvester, I hope The Refugee Start-Up series will be a source of inspiration for those who are facing bumps in the road, I assure you they have been an inspiration to me.
